Empowering Mums: 5 Tips for a Successful Return to the Workforce

Tamara Kennedy

As the world changes, so do the roles and responsibilities of women. Gone are the days when women were expected to just stay at home and take care of the children while their partners worked outside the home. Now, more and more women are choosing to pursue careers and contribute to the workforce. But what happens when mothers who took time off from their careers to raise their children want to return to the workforce? It can be a daunting and overwhelming experience, but with the right mindset and a little bit of planning, it is absolutely possible. Here are five tips to help mums make the transition back to the workforce.

1. Update Your Skills

One of the biggest challenges that mums who want to return to work face is feeling like they are no longer relevant in their field. It's understandable to feel that way after taking time off from your career, but it's important to remember that you have valuable experience and skills that you can bring to the table. Take some time to update your skills and learn about any new advancements in your field. Consider taking courses or attending conferences to help you stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technology.

2. Network

Networking is key to finding a job, especially if you have been out of the workforce for a while. Reach out to former colleagues, attend networking events, and join professional organizations in your field. Let people know that you are looking for work and what type of job you are interested in. The more people you connect with, the more likely you are to hear about job openings or get a referral.

3. Be Flexible

It's important to be flexible when you are returning to work after taking time off. You may need to consider part-time or contract work to get your foot in the door. Be open to different types of opportunities, as they can lead to bigger and better things down the line. Additionally, consider flexible working arrangements like telecommuting or job sharing. Many employers are open to these arrangements, especially for working parents.

4. Brush Up On Your Interview Skills

After taking time off from your career, it's normal to feel a bit rusty when it comes to interviewing. Take some time to practice your interview skills and research common interview questions in your field. Be prepared to discuss any gaps in your employment history and highlight your transferable skills. Remember that interviews are a two-way conversation, so come prepared with questions for the interviewer as well.

5. Believe In Yourself

Finally, it's important to believe in yourself and your abilities. Taking time off to raise your children was a valuable and important experience, and it doesn't diminish your worth or capabilities as a professional. Focus on your strengths and be confident in your ability to excel in your field. Believe that you can make the transition back to work successfully and you will be well on your way.

Returning to the workforce after taking time off to raise children can be a challenge, but with the right mindset and approach, it's absolutely possible. By updating your skills, networking, being flexible, practicing your interview skills, and believing in yourself, you can successfully make the transition back to work and thrive in your career.
