Following WHS Principles While Working From Home

In today's dynamic work environment, the concept of working from home (WFH) has become more prevalent than ever. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this transition, making remote work an essential part of our daily lives. However, along with the conveniences of WFH come new challenges, including those related to health and safety. Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) principles, which are typically associated with traditional office settings, are equally applicable to remote working conditions. This article emphasises the importance of following WHS principles while working from home to reduce injuries and promote overall well-being.


1. Proper Desk Posture


One of the most critical WHS principles when working from home is maintaining proper desk posture. Poor ergonomics can lead to musculoskeletal problems, including back and neck pain. To mitigate these issues, ensure that your chair and desk are at the right height, and your feet are flat on the floor. Position your keyboard and monitor so that your wrists and eyes are in a neutral position. Utilising an ergonomic chair and accessories, such as an adjustable keyboard tray or a monitor stand, can greatly improve your posture and reduce the risk of injuries.


2. Clean and Clear Workspace


A cluttered workspace can not only lead to disorganisation but also create hazards. Tripping over cables, navigating through piles of clutter, or reaching awkwardly for objects can result in accidents. Maintaining a clean and organised workspace is crucial for your safety and efficiency. Keep cables neatly organised, use cable management solutions, and designate a specific area for all work-related materials to minimise distractions and reduce the risk of accidents.


3. Monitor Height and Lighting


The height of your computer monitor is an often-overlooked aspect of ergonomics. Your monitor should be at eye level to prevent neck strain. Adjustable monitor stands or using books to elevate your monitor to the right height can help you achieve this. Adequate lighting is also vital to reduce eye strain and enhance productivity. Ensure your workspace is well-lit, and consider using a desk lamp to provide direct lighting, avoiding harsh glare on your screen.


4. Taking Regular Breaks


Long hours of continuous work without breaks can lead to fatigue, reduced productivity, and increased risk of injury. Following the WHS principle of taking regular breaks can help you maintain focus and prevent burnout. Implement the 20-20-20 rule, which involves looking at something 20 feet away (about 6 metres) for 20 seconds every 20 minutes to reduce eye strain. Additionally, take short breaks to stretch and walk around to reduce the risk of developing repetitive strain injuries.


5. Mental Health and Well-being


While WHS principles often focus on physical safety, mental health is an equally important aspect of well-being when working from home. Isolation, stress, and anxiety can take a toll on your mental health. To address this, maintain regular communication with colleagues and supervisors, set boundaries between work and personal life, and seek professional support if needed. A healthy work-life balance and emotional well-being are vital components of WHS in a remote work setting.


6. Ensuring Proper Equipment


It's essential to ensure that you have the appropriate equipment for your remote work setup. This includes a comfortable chair, an ergonomic keyboard and mouse, a reliable computer, and a stable internet connection. Substandard equipment can lead to discomfort, decreased productivity, and potential injuries. Investing in high-quality equipment can pay off in terms of improved performance and long-term well-being.


Working from home has become a widespread practice, but it's crucial to remember that WHS principles are just as relevant in this environment as in traditional office spaces. Proper desk posture, a clean and clear workspace, monitor height, good lighting, regular breaks, and attention to mental health are essential for reducing the risk of injuries and promoting overall well-being while working remotely. By following these principles, employees can stay safe, healthy, and productive, regardless of where their office is located.
