Still recruiting for 2027? Your window to secure top school talent is closing fast

A targeted school recruitment strategy can help you reach qualified teachers, leaders and support staff, even when job advertisements are not delivering.

Early school recruitment gives NSW schools a valuable head start. It creates time to confirm workforce needs, promote teaching and school support vacancies, interview candidates, complete checks and make appointments before the new school year begins.

If important roles are still vacant, however, it is not too late. A focused recruitment strategy can widen your reach, uncover candidates who are not actively applying and help you regain momentum.

Vacancies are down, but specialist talent is still competitive

The NSW teacher workforce is moving in a positive direction. In June 2026, the NSW Department of Education reported that teacher vacancies had reached a 12-year low, following the transition of more than 25,000 teachers and school support staff from temporary to permanent positions.

That broader improvement does not make every role easy to fill. Schools may still face intense competition for professionals in Mathematics, Science, Technological and Applied Studies, Inclusive and Special Education, School Counselling and EAL/D.

Success depends on more than attracting applicants. Schools need candidates with the right qualifications, experience and values—and a genuine fit with the community they will serve.

The best candidate may not be looking

Your ideal candidate may already be employed. They may not be checking job boards, may have missed your advertisement or may not have considered changing roles.

They may still be open to the right opportunity—if someone starts the conversation.

Active Recruitment extends your school’s reach beyond incoming applications. We use established networks and market knowledge to identify, approach and assess suitable professionals, including people who are open to a move but not actively searching.

Recruitment support across your school

Hard-to-fill vacancies are not limited to the classroom. We support targeted searches across:

  • Leadership: Heads of Department, Coordinators, Executives and senior leaders

  • Administration: Finance, Accounts, Human Resources and executive support

  • Operations: Facilities, Property, Grounds, IT and operational support

  • Teaching: Mathematics, Science, Physics, English, TAS, Technology, Inclusive and Special Education, Learning Support and EAL/D, Early Learning.

These appointments often require a precise combination of technical capability, sector experience and interpersonal strengths. When a general advertisement is not enough, a targeted search can make the difference.

A search built around your school

We start by learning what your school needs, why the position matters and what has—or has not—worked so far. Together, we define the essential requirements, the qualities linked to success and the reasons a strong candidate would choose your school.

We then build a tailored search that can include:

  • Promoting the vacancy to relevant audiences

  • Searching our established candidate network

  • Directly approaching suitable professionals

  • Assessing candidates before presenting a shortlist

The result is a more focused process, less pressure on your internal team and a shortlist of credible candidates worth meeting.

If the advertisement has not worked, rethink the search

Reposting the same vacancy in the same way may produce the same outcome. Before advertising again, step back and consider whether the search itself needs to change.

Ask your team:

  • Are we reaching the full pool of qualified candidates?

  • Could suitable people be employed and not actively looking?

  • Does our message clearly communicate why someone should join us?

  • Would a specialist search open doors our current process cannot?

Sometimes the vacancy is not the problem. The search strategy is.

Get your 2027 recruitment back on track

If you started recruiting in Term 3, you have already created valuable momentum. If you are starting later—or still have difficult vacancies—acting now gives you the best chance of securing the right person.

The sooner we get involved, the more time we have to test the market, approach prospective candidates and build a strong shortlist. We work alongside your recruitment team, taking on the searches that are consuming time or proving difficult to fill.
