Ace Your Interview: Avoid These Annoying Phrases

Tamara Kennedy

You have been invited for an interview to your dream job. The words you choose can either open doors or close them swiftly. It's essential to steer clear of certain phrases that can raise eyebrows and instead opt for stronger, more impactful responses that showcase your competence and professionalism.

Annoying Phrases to Dodge:

1. "I'm a perfectionist."

Instead: Share an instance where attention to detail and thoroughness positively impacted a project or task. Highlight your commitment to delivering high-quality work without fixating on perfection.

2. "My biggest weakness is that I work too hard."

Instead: Discuss a genuine area of improvement you've identified and the steps you've taken to address it. Demonstrate self-awareness and a proactive attitude towards self-improvement.

3. "I'll do anything."

Instead: Emphasise your versatility and adaptability by showcasing specific skills or experiences that align with the job requirements. Tailor your response to show eagerness without sounding desperate.

4. "I have no experience in that, but..."

Instead: Focus on transferable skills or relevant experiences you possess, even if they aren’t directly from the same industry. Highlight how these skills can be applied effectively in the role.

5. "To be honest..." or "Honestly..."

Instead: Skip these fillers and directly communicate your thoughts or experiences. These phrases might unintentionally imply that you're not always forthcoming otherwise.

Stronger Answers to Stand Out:

1. "I prioritise attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in tasks. For instance, in my previous role, my meticulousness in data entry reduced errors by X%."

2. "I continuously seek growth opportunities. One area I've been developing is [specific skill], and I've seen significant improvement by [mentioning steps taken]."

3. "I bring a diverse skill set, including [highlight relevant skills], which I'm excited to apply in this role. My adaptability has been evident in successfully navigating various challenges."

4. "While I haven't worked directly in this industry, my experience in [mention relevant experience or skills] has equipped me with the foundation needed to quickly learn and excel in new environments."

5. "In my experience, clear communication has been crucial. I aim to articulate thoughts directly without relying on filler words. This ensures transparency and effective collaboration."

Crafting responses that avoid clichés and generic phrases allows your personality and skills to shine through authentically. Employers seek candidates who can communicate effectively and demonstrate their value beyond rehearsed lines.

Interviews for all type of roles demand clarity, professionalism, and authenticity in your responses. Ditching overused phrases in favour of strong, tailored answers will undoubtedly set you apart as an exceptional candidate.

Good luck with your next interview!
